SOLAR PV SYSTEM
SHUTDOWN, START-UP & SAFETY PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE OPERATING This is a general operating guide, not an electrical isolation or maintenance procedure. Only operate clearly identified external switches that your installer has shown you. Do not remove covers, open enclosures, disconnect plugs/connectors, or work on wiring. The exact switch sequence depends on the inverter, battery, backup/changeover arrangement and site design.
1. Normal PV System Shutdown
For a standard PV-only installation with separate, clearly labelled isolators, and only where this sequence is confirmed by the site label and inverter manual:
Switch OFF the PV array DC main switch / isolator located beside the inverter.
Switch OFF the solar PV AC main switch / isolator located beside the inverter.
Turn OFF the solar PV off-grid main switch / isolator located beside the inverter, if installed.
If a battery is installed, shut it down only using the specific inverter and battery manufacturer's sequence. Do not assume the battery isolator is operated last.
PV modules and DC cabling can remain live in daylight even when the inverter is switched off. Shutdown does not make the installation safe to work on.
2. Normal PV System Start-Up
For a standard PV-only installation with the separate isolators above, and only where confirmed by the site label / inverter manual:
Switch ON the PV array DC isolator beside the inverter.
Switch ON the PV inverter AC isolator / designated PV AC circuit breaker.
Turn ON the solar PV off-grid main switch / isolator located beside the inverter, if installed.
If a battery is installed, restore it using the manufacturer's specified start-up sequence. Do not energise battery switches in an assumed order.
Allow the inverter to complete its start-up checks and reconnect. Check the inverter display or monitoring app for normal operation and confirm there are no active fault or alarm indications.
3. PV System Safety – Everyday Operation
Do not touch, unplug, disconnect or alter PV DC cables, connectors, battery cables or inverter terminals.
Never disconnect PV connectors under load. DC arcs can cause severe burns, fire or fatal electric shock.
PV modules generate DC voltage whenever exposed to light. An inverter shutdown or AC isolation does not remove voltage from array-side DC wiring.
Do not open inverter or battery covers. Internal components may retain hazardous voltage after shutdown; observe the manufacturer's stated discharge time.
Keep the inverter and battery area clear, dry, ventilated and free from combustible materials. Do not block cooling vents.
Keep children and unauthorised persons away. Do not store items against or on the inverter or battery.
Do not operate switches with wet hands or while standing in water. Do not operate damaged, hot, wet or visibly corroded equipment.
Do not attempt repairs, electrical testing or maintenance unless qualified, authorised and following safe isolation and test procedures.
Keep warning labels, circuit schedules and emergency contact details visible and legible.
4. Emergency Response
Smoke, Fire, Unusual Heat, Hissing, Strong Odour or Battery Damage
Keep clear of the inverter and battery. Do not touch the equipment or attempt to move a damaged battery.
Warn occupants and evacuate if there is smoke, fire or suspected battery failure. Call 112 or 999 if there is immediate danger.
Do not re-enter until the emergency services say it is safe.
Do not restart the system. Contact the installer / service provider once the area has been made safe.
Water Ingress, Storm Damage or Exposed / Damaged Cables
Keep away and prevent others from approaching. Do not touch wet equipment or fallen cables. Arrange inspection by a qualified electrical contractor before the system is used again.
5. Routine Visual Checks and Maintenance
From a safe distance, look for damage, loose covers, water ingress, corrosion, unusual noise, smell or discolouration.
Keep the area around the inverter and battery unobstructed and clean; do not spray or pour water onto equipment.
Check the monitoring app periodically for unexpected loss of generation, battery faults or inverter alarms.
Arrange inspection and servicing at intervals recommended by the manufacturer and installer. Maintenance and electrical testing must be completed by qualified personnel.
